What are the different types of surrogacy?

On Behalf of | Mar 27, 2025 | Surrogacy

Some people opt to use surrogacy to grow their family. There are many different reasons why they choose to do this. Regardless of the reason why someone has to turn to surrogacy, one of the first things they have to determine is what type of surrogacy they’re going to use.

Surrogacy is classified into two specific types: traditional and gestational, depending on the genetic relationship of the baby and surrogate. Understanding these two types can help individuals decide how to move forward.

Traditional versus gestational surrogacy

In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate provides her own egg, so she’s the biological mother of the child. The artificial insemination is done either through a donor or the intended father. This is often a complex situation because of the genetic connection between the surrogate and the child. This is the less common type of surrogacy.

In gestational surrogacy, the surrogate carries an embryo that isn’t from her egg. The baby doesn’t have any genetic connection to the surrogate. The conception can happen through in vitro fertilization involving the egg and sperm of the intended parents, donors, or one of each. This is the more common form of surrogacy, and it isn’t as complex as traditional surrogacy.

Making sure that everything is handled properly during surrogacy is critical. This includes having a comprehensive contract that protects everyone involved. Working with someone familiar with surrogacy and the legal aspects of it can be beneficial for anyone who’s considering this as an option.
